The Collaborative Effect: Grantee Perspectives on How Collaborative Funds Work Best

Authors: Jessica Love

We’re thrilled to announce the release of The Collaborative Effect: Grantee Perspectives on How Collaborative Funds Work Best, a sector-wide study examining how collaborative funds operate and the impact they have on the organizations and communities they aim to support.

Throughout 2025, 22 collaborative funds and 647 grantees participated in this research effort, co-led by ViaNova, Redstone Strategy Group, and Philanthropy Together, with support from the Hewlett Foundation. Drawing on one of the largest grantee datasets of its kind—paired with focus groups and in-depth interviews—the report offers a comprehensive look at what enables collaborative funds to build trust, strengthen alignment, and deepen impact with their grantees.

The findings highlight the design choices and day-to-day practices that help collaboratives “punch above their weight” in advancing their goals, from shared-power governance and responsive communication to right-sized operational practices and authentic proximity to grantee communities. Alongside the data, the report provides practical, actionable guidance for funders, intermediaries, nonprofits, and practitioners seeking to strengthen collaborative approaches.
